How is it possible that Kent is 6?! I want to slow time down but at the same time I want to see what interesting new stage comes next. Kent is a lot of fun. However, I wouldn't say that the last six years have been easy. He is at times a very challenging child. He is constantly making demands (right now he is chanting "lollipop, lollipop, lollipop!") His sweet tooth is driving me insane! At the same time I am amazed by his remarkable memory and ability to learn quickly. On the way home from the diamond mines with Nana and Pa Bob, Kent made up a game where Pa Bob would have to name the president. Kent gave the birth date and death date and Pa Bob had to figure out the president. No, Kent did not have a book of dates in front of him. Kent has actually memorized all of the presidents in order and their birth dates and death dates! For an example, he would say, "August 10, 1874 and October 20, 1964" and Pa Bob would have to say "Herbert Hoover". Mrs. Estala, his Kindergarten teacher, is trying to challenge him in school but I think she gets a little overwhelmed by him at times. While he is so advanced academically, Kent is also very impulsive. He has gotten in trouble a few times at school for fooling around in the bathrooms (repeatedly flushing the urinal to the point that it was overflowing, yelling, standing on the toilet, etc.). Oh, Kent! What are we going to do with you? For a while I considered homeschooling him so that he would be sufficiently challenged. However, I was home with him for a week during spring break and I thought I just might pull out all my hair in frustration! "Can I have candy?" "Can I call Ian" "When can I call Ian?" "Can I get a new toy at the store?" "Now, can I have candy?" Aggghhhhhh!
At school Kent has the opportunity to work one-on-one with the media specialist every day on writing, reading and reading comprehension. During naptime, Mrs. Estala lets him do 3rd grade math games on her i-pad. He also was one of the few to get chosen to have Spanish lessons on Friday afternoons. While Kent complains everyday that school is boring (He always says, "I am sooo sick of learning sight words and easy math!") I think that he makes extensions to his lessons himself. For an example he learned about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington in school and then came home and taught himself all of the rest of the presidents. In addition to teaching himself stuff at home he also spends a lot of time playing sports. All winter we could hear the sound of him dribbling the basketball outside. He is all about baseball now that baseball has started up again. Kent also loves to talk about how he is the fastest in his class. Kent loves sports, competing, sweets, animals and nature (Just today we were walking throught the woods looking for snakes and Kent said "We love nature, right Mama?" However, if I had to name one thing that Kent loves more than anything else I would have to say people. Especially other kids. If we see somebody in Walmart that he played in basketball one time he will wave and say "Hey! Remember we played basketball that one time?" Kent also loves his Wii and he is saving up to get an i-pod touch. We are also working on his work ethic... He is supposed to feed the cats every morning and evening but he often manages to convince Maeve to do it. However, one thing that Kent is always willing to do is snuggle. Every night I hear the slap, slap, slap of his big boy feet walking from his bedroom to ours. He climbs in bed, finds the mole on my neck that he has always loved to touch, falls back asleep and starts making a really loud sucking noise. Kent is a baby and a big kid at the same time. I enjoy every minute that I am with him and at the same time I fall asleep exhausted after spending a day with him. I love my beautiful, boisterous, brilliant boy and I am so proud and happy to be his "mama". |

Awww! Super cute, Carrie!
Kent, you sound super smart. Next time you come to MI, please teach Leah her letter sounds, so she can read like you! :)
Good job Kent! I would like to play the president game with you. I better start studying.
Kent, we all enjoy you so much. You are interesting and a delight to be around. I feel so fortunate to be your Nana.
